Author: Marie Javins

Comic Series: Iron Man

Original Story or Adaptation: Prose Novel adaptation from the storyline by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov

Official Synopsis: After revealing his secret identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark aims to engineer a better world. He is shifting the focus of Stark Industries from destructive weapons to life-improving technologies. With his revelation and his plan, Tony expects fame and adulation, but he is only going to get more trouble. After suffering a tragic, public failure, Tony knows he must improve Iron Man if he ever hopes to defeat a devastating new threat. One solution is a potentially lethal techno-organic virus known as Extremis. It will grant Tony more power than he has ever known—and test his spirit to the breaking point . . .

Review: This adaptation of the storyline by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov was a quick, entertaining read that left me turning the pages, excited to read what was going to happen next. The author does a great job of capturing not just the action sequences that a superhero prose novel is expected to include, but also featuring internal monologues for the main characters that can explain their thoughts and motivations. My three favorite sections of the book are the beginning, when Tony Stark is dealing with the fallout of publicly announcing he is Iron Man, the first big action set piece between Iron Man and the lead antagonist, and the section dealing with scientific philosophy that definitely shows the book's roots as a Warren Ellis adaptation.

This book was a lot of fun, and I would recommend it to comic book or MCU fans.

What Works: Great internal monologues from the lead characters showing their motivations. Good action sequences, and I was especially pleased with the section on scientific philosophy.

What Doesn’t: There were no serious problems with this book, in my opinion. It would have been better served with one more action sequence.

Rating: 7 out of 10 repulsor rays
