Review: Something Is Killing the Children: Hope Is a Knife by James Tynion IV and Kiersten White builds on the world of the comic series to present a story that is a combination coming of age tale meets supernaturual horror. This novel features an atmosphere that is unsettling while also giving space for character development with a healthy dose of world-building within. The feeling of terror the writers cultivate is able to build an ominous sense of dread as well as a sense of mystery that helps to propel the story.


Do not worry if you haven't read the source material for this prose novel. I have not, and I was able to understand everything just fine. One of my favorite things about the book was the characterization. The story does not rely solely on monsters and gore but deals with the emotional consequences of missing children and where horrific creatures actually do exist. The believability of the characters makes the horror elements all the more terrifying and hit harder.


Hope is a Knife isn't simply a monster story; beneath the scares is a story about fear, trauma, courage, and the desperate hope that survives when everything seems lost. Tynion IV and White have produced a creepy and emotionally grounded addition to the Something Is Killing the Children universe that should satisfy existing fans and leave readers wondering what might be waiting in the darkness.



What Works: You do not have to be a reader of the comic series to understand what is going on.


What Doesn’t: No complaints.


Final Thoughts: I love this novel and highly recommend it!
